Interactive global collaboration fosters empathy and creates a future of kindness

By championing empathy in society, the project strives to foster stronger and more inclusive communities made possible through smarter technology, and to restore kindness in places where citizens increasingly feel disconnected.

Lenovo’s Kind City is the largest participatory public “census” to imagine and co-write a plan for a city of the future based on kindness. Is it mission? Bring a more empathetic future to life with insight into global research, a public invitation to participate, and an interactive podcast featuring city dwellers and some of the world’s brightest minds.

Bringing together leading thinkers and global experts in their fields, Lenovo’s Kind City is led by a panel of world-renowned visionaries who make up the project’s Kind Council. This includes Anglo-American fashion designer and philanthropist Tan France, 2020 TIME Kid of the Year and inventor Gitanjali Rao, Brazilian rapper Emicida, British robotics scientist Dr Peter Scott-Morgan, German futurist Oona Strathern and author. and Japanese entrepreneur Ibun Hirahara.

The group collaborated on a Choosing Your Own Path podcast to discuss the fundamentals of making a lovable city, such as inclusion, trust, sustainability, dreams and opportunity.

As the backbone of the entire initiative, the innovative podcast also explores powerful conversations and incredible stories with voices less commonly heard in Futurism. Listeners can navigate from multigenerational life in the United States to climate change in China, tech hubs in Brazilian favelas, looking for dreams in the UK, and a currency of kindness in Japan.

The insightful and interactive podcast encourages listeners to participate in the discussion while giving them the ability to navigate an audio journey personalized to their interests. Over 20 stories, discussions and interviews have been captured across the world, from the United States and Germany to Japan and Brazil.

The podcast features NGOs and charitable partners from around the world, showcasing their efforts to support the city’s residents. Lenovo will work directly with these organizations over the coming months and identify the most effective ways of collaboration, from technology solutions workshops with Lenovo experts to device donations and financial support.

Major New Research Reveals ‘Unkindness’

The Kind City project follows new research from Lenovo that delves deeply into the lives of city dwellers and their perspectives on the quality of life in their current cities.

Polling more than 5,000 city dwellers in five countries (Brazil, Germany, Japan, UK, US), the study reveals the growing need in society to rethink the way we live together in city centers after the pandemic.

Research has found that traditional organizations and government do not prioritize kindness, leaving neighborhoods and local communities to shoulder more than their share of the blame.

Ultimately, a major ‘kindness gap’ exists globally in cities with 97% of all respondents feeling it is important for their communities to have kindness / empathy, but only 37% believe that their current city is a great place to live or work.

Although the study finds that respondents have a rather positive impression of the quality of life they live in, they also make a clear link between greater kindness in their cities and many tangible benefits, for example, better mental health. and physical; feelings of inclusion and pride; more fun and flexibility, which could unlock even happier lifestyles. In the face of these challenges, there is a significant opportunity for improvement, including:

  • Most respondents (55%) believe that the quality of life in their city is not improving or remains the same. In cities around the world, majorities say there is room for improvement in their general living and working conditions.

  • Residents of the city have reservations about how the officials who represent them view kindness when making decisions for the city. Less than one in five (17%) think their decision-makers value kindness and empathy when it comes to their city.

  • Most people think that technology will be a key solution (83%) to promote and employ benevolence in their cities, especially in Brazil (88%).

What the Kindness Divide presents is a real openness to the private sector to enable and strengthen kindness and empathy. More than ever, there is an urgent need to work for a more equitable future and we can use the power of technology to make it happen.

Get Involved: Become a Caring City Citizen

The initiative calls on people from all walks of life, from all major cities, to express their vision of what a smoother city should be.

Lenovo invites the general public to share their personal vision of an empathetic and inclusive community by becoming citizens of Kind City.

All responses received up to November 15 will be curated using AI and turned into 10 Founding Principles. These will be shared across the world through a range of exciting installations and experiential initiatives. Lenovo will also reveal details of the global NGO collaborations featured in the podcast, with actions shaped by Kind City’s submissions and research.
